Questions about our 100% Cotton Knitted Blankets

How do weighted blankets work

Science shows that the deep touch pressure provided by a weighted results in deeper sleep cycles, lowers stress and worry, and increases happiness. Here’s what a weighted blanket does:

  • Delivers deep touch pressure evenly distributed on the body that mimics the sensation of being hugged.
  • Improves sleep by increasing serotonin, the main chemical in the brain that regulates sleep, relaxation, and mood.
  • Reduces stress by increasing melatonin, cueing the body to rest and relax.
  • Promotes happiness by decreasing cortisol, which reduces sleep dysfunction, pain, and stress.

That's not just what our customers tell us! Read what scientists and researchers have to say:

How does a weighted blanket improve my health

The most significant health benefits of weighted blankets include improved sleep and reduced feelings of anxiety and stress. Many people with autism, fibromyalgia, post-traumatic stress disorder, restless leg syndrome, or sensory processing disorder have found sleeping under weight benefits their health.

How are Sommio weighted blankets different?

Scientific research has shown that weighted blankets can help with a number of disorders including anxiety and insomnia. Unfortunately most of the weighted blankets currently on the market are made using processes that are not environmentally friendly, using cheap synthetic materials and filled with plastic beads to create the weight. This not only makes them hot and uncomfortable, but most critically, terrible for our planet. These blankets are likely to have a short life, and eventually will end up in a landfill.

Our Knitted Weighted Blanket is made from nothing but layers of organic cotton knitted into a satisfyingly chunky weave. Our Weightex blankets use natural biodegradable materials.

We believe that sustainability, at the core of our business, is not only the right thing to do, but it also leads to better products. Our blankets are cooling and breathable, solving the common problem of overheating under a weighted blanket and our packaging is biodegradable, no single use plastic for us.

Not only that, they look good. The knitted blanket is available in four soothing colours that would compliment any interior and the Weightex blanket fits in a duvet cover of your choice so can match your bedding.

Can a weighted blanket help with Stress and Anxiety?

If you're interested in the science, read our article on how weighted blankets can help reduce stress and anxiety. In short, the weight in the blanket creates a sensation of deep touch pressure which has been shown to product serotonin, the happy hormone, and melatonin, the sleep hormone. Not only that, but it can reduce production of cortisol, the stress hormone. It's like getting a hug, and helps you relax and feel calmer.

Can a weighted blanket help with Restless Leg Syndrome?

The short answer is yes, the deep touch pressure effect of the weighted blanket and help treat this condition. For and explanation look at our article on Restless Leg Syndrome.

Can I use my blanket straight away?

If you’re using a weighted blanket for the first time, it’s important to allow your body to get used to the weight. We suggest using it for less than 2 hours during the few days, building up to a full night over the course of a week to 10 days. It can sometimes this long to fully adjust to sleeping under weight.

Some people find it works for them immediately, but we're all different. That's why we give you plenty of time to try our blankets.

What weight should my blanket be?

The quick answer is about 10% to 15% of your body weight. But there are other factors to consider, such as your general wellbeing. Check out our ultimate guide to choosing the right weight for more details.

How do I know if a weighted blanket will work for me?

We can't guarantee that a weighted blanket will work for you, that is why we offer a 30 day trial period, to give you time to try using it in different ways and see if it helps. If it doesn't then you can simply return it to us within 30 days of receipt.
